Walter(r) annouce new government initiatives to revive bananas

Agriculture Minister Matthew said solid actions to increase Dominica’s export portfolio and agricultural sector are in the pipeline.

Walter told a press conference here Wednesday, that government will work with WINFRESH to further diversify Dominica’s export agriculture.

He said government will engage in bulk purchasing of fertilizers and work with all stakeholder, while undertaking intense training with farmers.

“We will continue our support to the agriculture sector so that it will acquire new dynamism in the process of economic growth and development,” he said.

Meantime chairman of the Dominica Banana Producers Limited Luke Prevost says the challenge of stabilizing the industry now lies in the implementation of a recent Memorandum of Understanding signed between FAIRTRADE and the DBPL.

“It became very clear to us that in the banana business, in order to export, you must have a production base and we recognize that the production base was slipping. we recognize that all needed to collaborate in an effort to help the industry. This is a platform for really developing the industry. We now need to focus on implement the MOU and to see how we can stabile the industry and rebuild a firm and reliable production base,” he added

And the Chief Executive Officer of WINFRESH formally WIBDECO Bernard Connibert says collaboration between DBPL and the DNFTO could resolve longer term problems in the banana and agriculture industries.
