Dominica is expected to join other members of the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) which will sign unto the Economic Union Treaty at 5pm today.
The treaty, which is expected to be signed in the Kittian capital of Basseterre, was established to create a single financial and economic space in the sub-region grouping.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the Economic Union Treaty is a practical way forward to bring greater economic and social prosperity to member states
“Dominica has indicated very clearly that we are in support of this treaty. All Dominicans I have met and spoke to about it are in support of the economic union. My personal view is that it is practical way forward because 6000,000 people cannot continue going about the world as independent countries. There are some things that we have to do and maintain our sovereignty but here are many things that we ought to be doing together to bring greater economic and social prosperity for citizens,” he told his swearing in ceremony recently.
He said “if 27 countries in Europe can do it, why can’t the OECS do it. Unless we look at this very seriously then it’s something that will continue to elude us and at the end of the day the people who will lose out are our citizens,” he said.
Skerrit has asked for support from all citizens of the OECS
