Police have mounted a vigorous search for 36-year-old Steven Alphonse of Belles who escaped from the Stock Farm Prison on Wednesday.
Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Claude Weekes in a statement issued on Monday said at the time of his escape, Alphonse was serving a 40 year jail sentence for murder
“On the day in question, Alphonse along with other inmates was engaged extracting coals from a coal pit on the prisons compound between 8:30 am and 5:40 pm. At the end of the day’s work, a roll call was conducted which revealed that Alphonse was missing. A search on the prisons compound proved futile,” Weekes said.
On June 24th 1993, Alphonse was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by the High Court of Justice in Dominica and in December 2007, he appealed his convict ion at the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court which was upheld and his sentence was commuted to 40 years in prison.
“He is considered to be armed and dangerous. In fact this is the third time that he has escaped. Any information about his whereabouts should be reported to the Police Headquarters, States Prison or nearest police station”, Weekes said.
