A man was finned over half a million dollars after he pleaded guilty to drug related charges.

On Monday, a Roseau Magistrate imposed a $638,000 fine on Luford George of Calibishi, for possession of 319 pounds of compress marijuana weed with intent to supply to another.

According to Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Claude Weekes, he was ordered to pay 250,000 forthwith and another $250,000 by January 21, 2010 or in default of payment seven years imprisonment.

He said George was also slapped with an additional fine of $138,000 but was suspended for two years.

“It means therefore, should he be convicted of drug trafficking offenses within the period of two years, he is expected to pay $138,000 and any other fine that may be imposed. George was a repeat offender,” Weekes said.

In passing sentence, magistrate Tiyani Behanzin said that George seems to be engaged in an organized drug trafficking enterprise which has to be dealt with seriously.

The convicted man was represented by defense council Zina Dyer.

Many believed that the fine was a bit harsh but Weekes says persons cannot continue to get involved in drugs and receive a slap on the wrist.
