Dominica joins the rest of the world today to observe World Rivers Day.
The day will begin with a church service in Layou, followed by a number of activities, including a grand Titiwi Festival in Layou.
Member of the Layou Improvement Committee Father Franklyn Cuffy said apart from just coming together, persons will be educated on water preservation and conservation.
“We need to understand that water is essential to life and we need to preserve it. In a few years, water will become a scarce commodity and its preservation is essential,” he said.
He added, “look at the situation with the Layou River and the mining activities that are currently going on there; It’s unacceptable.”.
Meantime Cuffy said persons will have an opportunity to enjoy a fun day on Sunday at the Titiwi Festival
He said the fish will be available in a wide variety and persons will also be educated on the various dishes and how to prepare it.
The Layou Improvement Committee will also make a petition to have the Titiwi become Dominica’s national dish.
A number of government officials are expected to attend Sundays church service.

while we celebrate WRD we should think seriously about regenerating our rivers.; they’re dying. I lived in Roseau and it has pained me to see what has happened to the Roseau River. I used to stay on the bridge and head-dive into the waters below. Now within one generation its dead. My children won’t even know it existed. And while Mr. Timothy and Labour are talking about refurbishing the city and building a Roseau River Promenade, they should first think of regenerating the river—else what’s the point of the promenade? what about the mining going on on the river bed in layou—come on let’s get serious
