Minister Blackmore and Chinese official sign contract
One of the four pillar projects, as agreed in the Memorandum of Understanding of March 23, 2004 between the Dominican and Chinese Governments- the West Coast Road project- moved a giant step closer to becoming a reality with the signing of the contract to construct this vital piece of road.
The contract signing ceremony took place in the Cabinet Room of the Financial Centre, earlier today.
Minister of Public Work and Infrastructural Development Rayburn Blackmore says the government recognizes that a road network in good condition is indispensable to the overall development of any country.
“Today’s event certainly represents a true expression of the true relationship that exists between the people of Dominica and China,” he said.
According to Blackmoore, no genuine Dominican can criticize the move to establish diplomatic relations with the China.
“We have been very measured in our approach as to the way we treat our road condition in Dominica. We know that we have 230 kilometers of main road in Dominica and only 51 percent are in fair condition, 20 percent poor and 25 percent in good condition. If we are to realize any good economic development, improved road networks are vital,” he said.
He said tremendous benefits will be derived with the construction of the West Coast Road.
“Good road brings better economic activity and creates the platform for growth. Its gives drivers more confidence on the road and it lends o the overall productivity in Dominica,” he said.
All materials for the project are expected to be purchased locally. A number of locals will also be employed on the project,.
The project will cost in the approximately $100 million.
