Health Minister the Hon. Julius Timothy says Dominican men need to know that they are primarily responsible for their health and should do whatever is necessary to maintain a healthy life.

Timothy made the statement yesterday while addressing participants at the 1000 People Family City Walk at the Newtown Savannah. The walk, organized and hosted by the Roseau City Council in conjunction with the Ministry of Health was held in observance of World Health Day 2010.

“It’s so heartening to see so many of you venture on this exercise.” Timothy said. “Unfortunately we did not have sufficient men. I want the men of Dominica to know we are responsible for our health. We cannot just blame the

Ministry of Health when things go wrong in our lives. First and foremost, the responsibility is ours to keep ourselves healthy”

Minister Timothy noted that a number of Dominican men were suffering from a range of chronic non-communicable diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and prostate cancer that can easily be prevented with a few lifestyle changes.

“All these diseases are preventable. All these diseases are based on our lifestyles. If we decide to exercise and eat healthily those diseases will, to a large extent, go away’ he said.

Look, the Rasta community advocated this 40 years ago and what was done about it? You called us all sorts of names within and without. It’s high time we set our priorities straight and let the people understand that they really NEED to follow the Rasta way of eating when we used to profess the right eating habits, back in the 1960s -1970s. Things have changed now so, let’s revisit the past and do it right, man. No more political correctness, prejudices, malice, taking credit when it’s not due you. Health Minister, you need to look at the chemically laden foods being fed to the people and do something about it, not come here now and make a statement to look good in the media. Take action, the first step is to eradicate chemically laden foods from our supplies. Words without actions are dead (but then and again you are a politician) High blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and prostate cancer were unheard of 40 years ago in this country. So get with the program Health Minister. it’s our responsibility, but, it’s your job because you’re getting paid to do this job. START DOING IT! This is my contribution on this topic.
    Peace
