International Day for the Abolition of Slavery
Local Historian Dr Lennox Honeychurch has encouraged Dominicans to reaffirm their commitment to the complete eradication of slavery and slavery-like practices.
Tuesday was recognized as the International Day for the Abolition of slavery. Dr. Honeychurch says several forms of slavery which still exist need to be strongly rejected.
“Dominica is one that has had the effect of slavery and all of the fallout from it in the decade afterwards. It is important that the UN should recognize such a day, also because in the work there are still slavery happening in various forms. It is not something that is totally historic,” he said.
He said the day should be seen as one to prevent dictatorship and encourage freedom for all.
