Fond St.Jean sea defence and roadworks
Chairman of the Fond St Jean Village Council Marcus Thomas says he is thankful to the Roosevelt Skerrit government for fulfilling a promise made several years ago.
Thomas told the Official opening ceremony to commission the Fond St Jean Sea Defense project Friday, that several governments before had neglected that road.
The objective of the project was to protect this vital piece of road which was being undermined by the sea.
“I have many comments with regards to this road. For over half a century, I am walking that road and I know that never before, no roadwork so positive was ever done to this piece of road. And so I know its good for the community because again when a government gets into office, they should make things better, If this road is not better than it was then we didn’t need a road. It’s the beginning of progress for this community. We have to appreciate a government who can think and care for the people of a community. This is the best thing that has ever happened to this community for a long time,” he said.
The objective of the project was to protect this vital piece of road which was being undermined by the sea.
The Fond St. Jean Sea Defence and Roadwork’s project involved the rehabilitation of 240m of Road and the construction of 290m of retaining wall. The Carriageway is 6.5m wide with slipper drains on both sides and a 1.5m wide sidewalk. The average height of the retaining wall is 4m.
The works span from the Fond St. Jean Bridge to the bend near the Fisheries facility at the beginning of the village.
