DCS Inc hoping to conduct cancer screenings in all health districts in Dominica
The Dominica Cancer Society Inc is hoping to conduct and facilitate cancer screenings in every health district in Dominica. This follows on the heels of the overwhelming response to the ‘Breast Cancer’ screenings held at the Roseau Health Center during the just concluded Cancer Month in October.
The decision to conduct island-wide cancer screenings was taken at a Board of Directors meeting of the Dominica Cancer Society Inc on Friday at the Princess Margaret Hospital Chapel.
At its upcoming annual general meeting carded for December 5th 2009, the Society will embark upon a drive to register new members, especially among cancer survivors and their families and friends. Fr. Franklyn Cuffy C.Ss.R, Vice Chair of the Dominica Cancer Society Inc. has been encouraging cancer survivors to get involved with the Society for information and support. “We can help [persons] get active in the fight against cancer” he said.
The objectives of the Dominica Cancer Society Inc. are saving lives by encouraging early cancer detection, helping men and women make informed personal health decisions based on the latest information, supporting patients and survivors, family members, and friends with a variety of programmes and community services and advocating with lawmakers to increase government’s funding for access screening and care for all regardless of ability to pay.

The Dominica Cancer Society Inc. will be in the La Plaine Health District in January 2010 as it launches a National Cancer Screening. January 5 Riviere Cyrique, Jan. 7 La Plaine, Jan. 14 Grand Fond, Jan. 19 Boetica, and January 21 Delicies. The Directors of the Dominica Cancer Society are very encouraged by the number of Survivors, Families and Friends who are joining the ‘fight’ against Cacner, the #1 killer in Dominica.

The Dominica Cancer Society Inc. and the Family Nurse Practitioners of the La Plaine Health District continue to be over whelm with the response to the ongoing free cancer screening in that Health District.
On Thursday, January 14, 2010 fifty-two women and two men took the opportunity to be screened. Six of those screened needed urgent referral!
The fact that ten (10) percent of those screened needed referral raises serious concern for the Dominica Cancer Society. Nurse Educator Allison Samuel-Llyod and Sr. Cordelia Pierre DJ are carded to be in Boetica on January 19 and Delices on January 28. A closing ceremony of appreciation is also slated for Thursday, 28 January 2010, in the la Plaine Health District.
In the meantime, plans are well on its way for the free Cancer Screening to be conducted in the Health District of Portsmouth. The Portsmouth Family Nurse Practitioner and the Espwa (Hope) Cancer Society of Ross University School of Medicine are expected to collaborate in this effort, during the month of February.
