Social Security in Dominica and Faking Sickness

Minister of Finance and Social Security (DSS) Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is encouraging Dominican employees to be honest when claiming sick leave allowances.

He says an employee claiming sick benefits under pretense further drains the DSS in the areas of productivity and financial growth. He was addressing the 4th Annual Stakeholders meeting of the Dominica Social Security (DSS) at the Fort Young Hotel Thursday morning.

“I am concerned about a matter brought to my attention. That matter refers to a practice being adopted by some person’s to call in sick or resort to submitting medical certificates for sick leave when they have a non medical issue,” he said.

He also accused some private medical practitioners of soliciting these persons. He said when people are always sick, the nation’s productivity is compromised, the flow of contributions into the system is reduced and the payout of benefits increases.

“The monies vested should also be prudently managed to ensure the financial well being of the system itself. By implication it means that if sufficient persons are not well enough to work, while at the same time demands are made from the fund to pay benefit, the sustainability of the fund will be called into question,” he said.
