Dominica will soar to greater heights in the area of health care provision when a new state-of-the-art health center is opened in the village of Castle Bruce on Friday, March 28, 2008 from 3.30pm.
This new type 3 Health Center, funded by the European Commission at a cost of $1.3 million ECD, will serve the entire Castle Bruce Health District.
This new addition to Dominica’s health care system contains the following:
- One screening room with an accompanying doctor’s room
- One family nurse practitioner’s room
- One community health nurse’s room
- One dentistry section and a compressor
- One delivery room with the required facilities
- One Environmental Health Officer’s office
- One room for nurses and staff with washroom facilities
- One sterilization room
- A pharmacy section
- One casualty area accommodating two to three beds and a washroom facility
- A waiting area with male and female washroom facility
The feature address will be delivered by Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit. Other officials expected to address the official opening ceremony include the Parliamentary Representative for Castle Bruce constituency, Hon. Loreen Bannis-Roberts, Minister for Health and the Environment, Hon. John Fabien, a representative of the Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Director of Primary Health Care, Dr. Griffin Benjamin, among others.
The opening of a new health center in Castle Bruce comes at a time when significant sums are being invested by the government in the health sector.
A diagnostic center in Portsmouth and an Intensive Care Unit at the Princess Margaret Hospital have been opened in the last eighteen months.
Presently two hundred and eighteen (218) nurses are being trained, unprecedented in the history of Dominica’s health sector.
