After several months of complaints to the authorities without a satisfactory resolution of the matter, residents of Layou led by the Layou village Improvement Committee (LVIC) set up roadblocks along the main village road in a peaceful protest action against Gaddarkhan Quarrying Company. Villagers complained that Gaddarkhan’s quarrying operations and plans to build an asphalt plant at Coco close to the Layou River was poisoning the environment, destroying their livelihoods and threatening their lives. The six hour protest was suspended only after the government signed an MOU with the LVIC in which it promised to serve a stop order on Gaddarkhan’s operations.
