Ports Minister Charles Savarin has told residents of Marigot that the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) government is committed to the construction of an International Airport.

Savarin, who was addressing the first of a series of town hall meetings last night, said the DLP is currently looking at recommendations and feasibility of the project.

“We are looking at where we can do [the airport] and the 1988 recommendation. We could not afford to borrow money to build the airport then and we cannot afford to borrow money to do it now. If we are to build it, we would need to find other ways. The Prime Minister has demonstrated that he is able to find other ways-other than borrowing at commercial rates-to undertake projects in Dominica and we have confidence that he will find other ways to fund the construction of an international airport in Dominica,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Skerrit informed the Town Hall that governments before the DLP had made promises about an international airport but failed to put the mechanisms in place for its construction.

He told the residents of Marigot that night landing facilities at the Melville Hall Airport will enhance their community and create jobs for residents there.

This government on coming into office actually met money for the construction of the International Airport in the Woodfordhill/Marigot area. They gave the land that was bought to build the airport to their political friends, Elford Henry even got a house in the process. They then squandered the money wasting it to develop Melville Hall. The amount of money spent on Melville Hall to date would be more than enough to get us well started on our international airport.

The same thing was done with the Windsor Park Stadium, where the government met money to complete the construction of the Stadium, but chose rather to squander it on expensive SUV's and other forms of reckless spending. All the studies for the international airport were completed and plans for the construction were already in place. Saverin and Skerrit needs to familiarize themselves with the halcrow report which spoke to the feasibility of the proposed airport which was dumped by this government, instead of talking nonsense about taking loans at commercial rates to build airport. Not even Melville Hall they can repair, how do you expect this incompetent government to build international airport. This is simply election gimmicktry. We all know the PM to be a stranger to the truth. Not Marigot people that they were speaking to.
