An election observer team has indicated to Dominica that its voters list is bloated and needs to be cleaned out.

On the request of Prime Minister Skerrit, election observers from CARICOM and the OAS monitored the events leading up to Dominica’s general elections and voting day as well.

Head of the OAS observer mission, Steven Griner said the missions’ general impression of the elections in Dominica was very positive but a number of recommendations must be considered.

“The voter registry is bloated there is something like 65,000 names on the list and the population here is estimated at 70,000 so there are certain names perhaps they’re deceased, migrated, duplicates that are on the list that perhaps could be struck from the list,” he said.

Griner said in addition to that, there are disparities in the population. One constituency is about 6,000 while another is about 1000. I think those needs to be brought into better balance.

Griner said the mission received complaints about irregularities in the electoral process but he said the issue needs to be addressed by the laws of Dominica.

According to him the absence of voter identification cards is a major difference as compared to other islands.

Meantime Head of the CARICOM observer Mission Hensley Robinson said his team was pleased with the results.
