Prime Minister the Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit will deliver an address to the Nation this evening from 9.30pm in Mahaut. The event will be simulcast live via DBS Radio and Kairi FM. ‘

While the circular sent out from the office of the government press secretary did not indicate or hint at what the address would be about, it is widely believed that the Prime Minister will use the opportunity to announce the date for the upcoming general election.

A general election in Dominica is not constitutionally due until May 2010 but it has been widely held view that Prime Minister Skerrit would call a snap election. Some have suggested that Dominicans could be going to the polls as early as mid December.

So far predictions of an early election have all fallen flat and so there is every possibility that this might be a case of crying wolf. However Skerrit has been testing the waters since mid year. In June he informed party supporters at the DLPs Delegates Conference in La Plaine that they were on “red alert” and that “the signal to fire shall come without warning.”

This call was repeated less than one month later at a massive DLP rally at Lindo Park in Goodwill. Laborites were admonished to stay tuned for the call.

In July Cabinet launched a series of town hall meetings around the island designed to inform the public of the various government programmes and developments around Dominica. The Opposition heavily criticized the town-halls as a poorly disguised attempt to use state resources to fund the DLP’s election campaign. The DLP eventually responded with a sudden break from the town halls announcing a switch to the regular campaign style mass street meetings.

Last Thursday night, the DLP held the first of these meetings in Lagoon, Roseau. Again the Prime Minister, relishing his moral and political victory arising from the Shangri-La case in the BVI, teased and hinted at an early election. “I urge you tonight comrades and friends to stay focus. Let them stew in their broth that they boil for others. Tell them I say get set to spend five more years in opposition in Dominica. Because my friends as for me and my party we have much work to do. We have a vision and we have a plan. Soon I will seek authorization to put that plan in action. Stay tuned, stay tuned, stay tuned my brothers and sisters” he said.

It would seem finally the waiting game is over. At tonight’s ‘Big Red Machine’ rally in Mahaut, the Prime Minister is expected to finally break his silence and announced the much anticipated election date.
