President Liverpool to lay wreath at war memorial on Sunday

President of Dominica, His Excellency, Dr. Nicholas J. O. Liverpool and Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, are among scores of dignitaries expected to lay wreaths at the Official Commemoration of Remembrance Day on Sunday, November 8, 2009 in memory of the millions who died, including Dominicans, during the wars 1914-1918 and 1939-1945. There will also be the laying of wreaths in honour of the Free French Forces.

In the United Kingdom, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II will lead Britain’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations at the Cenotaph in Whitehall in London.

Remembrance Day is celebrated in Dominica every year on the Sunday closest to the 11th of November.

It is hoped that as many as possible of those who served in Her Majesty’s Forces and in the Nursing Service during the two world wars will be present at the ceremony.

The event will take place at the War Memorial, Victoria Street in Roseau from 8:00 a.m this Sunday.

Other dignitaries expected include Ministers of Government, Members of the House of Assembly, Heads of Religious denominations, Heads of Government Departments, Offices of the Diplomatic Corps, Consular Offices, Members of the Roseau City Council, and other Local Government Authorities. The General Public is invited to attend the ceremony at the War Memorial.

Groups expected to participate in the March Past are: Dominica Government Band; Dominica Legion Contingent; Police Service; Dominica Cadet Corps; Fire and Ambulance Services; Dominica Youth Corps; Scouts; Cubs; Girl Guides; Red Cross and Girls’ Brigade.

As part of the official commemoration all persons will be requested to observe two (2) minutes silence at 8:00 a.m. and all vehicular traffic and normal activities should be suspended during the period of silence.
