Edison James (L) and Ron Green (R) protest DBS blackout of opposition during campaign
Until Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit can recall the general elections, the Opposition United Workers Party said they would boycott the parliament of Dominica.
Opposition Leader Ron Green in a statement issued on Tuesday said that in light of the gross and unprecedented irregularities, fraud and breaches of the law of Dominica in the elections as conducted by the Dominic Labour Party (DLP) on December 18th 2009 it will boycott the parliament for several reasons.
Green sited “the unprecedented use of bribery to unlawfully influence the election results, the denial of the opposition of access to the state owned media which rendered the elections unfair and the paid movement of large numbers of overseas based persons as an inducement to vote which substantially distorted the results in an unfair and illegal way,” as the reasons for the boycott.
According to Green, political bribery of any kind is against the laws of Dominica. “The DLP has conducted the elections in a manner that fragrantly disregarded these provisions,” he said.
Green and his Opposition party are demanding fresh elections under an immediately cleansed electoral list and electoral reform to render the process of voting free and fair.
“In the mean time the UWP will boycott this parliament as illegitimate until our demands are met. We the UWP also issue a call to all patriotic citizens and institutions to come together to prevent a creping dictatorship from wiping out the democratic rights and freedoms of the people of Dominica which has been fought for for so long,” he said.
The UWP only took 3 of the 18 seats which were at stake at the December 18, poll.
