His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie
Frankly, much of what passes as scholarship these days is nothing more than intellectual gymnastics. A case in point is Dr. Carolyn Cooper’s take on Rastafarians’ veneration of Haile Selassie.
Speaking recently on Q95 Fm Hot Seat with Matt Peltier, the UWI professor described the Rastafarians’ worship of Selassie as God “a wonderful post colonial moment.”
According to her, “claiming of Selassie as God is a wonderful post colonial moment where, as Garvey said, we must recreate God in our own image. For me, the Rastafari celebration of a black God is a moment of emancipation from mental slavery, an idea that Garvey himself conceived which was popularized in song by Bob Marley.”
One excited caller to the programme gleefully welcomed Cooper’s comments as “enlightened discussion.”
A closer look at the professor’s comments however would show that the worship of Haile Selassie or a black God is neither wonderful, nor enlightened. While I understand and appreciate Garvey, Marley, Rastafarian and other Pan-Africanists efforts to decolonize the black mind and inspire Africans at home and in the diaspora to take pride in their blackness and African heritage, the idea of Haile Selassie as God is simply preposterous.
First and foremost, for those of us who accept the Bible as the final arbiter in all matters relating to faith and conduct, it’s important to note that the Holy Writ nowhere substantiates the claim. The idea, as Dr. Cooper rightfully states, is wholly the invention of Marcus Garvey, popularized in song by the legendary Bob Marley. So while the idea makes for a lively discussion on Pan Africanism or conscious reggae lyrics, it’s terrible theology. The unyielding and uncompromising declaration of scriptures have always been and always will be “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Tim 2:5).”
Secondly, a salient point that seems lost to most Pan-Africanist, is the simple fact that before Africa lost its way in animism and worship of the ancestors, it worshiped the one true God of the Bible. The continent has always been organically and historically linked to the ancient land of Palestine and by default, to Judaism and Christianity. Long before Christianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire under Emperor Constantine, the Christian faith had already spread to all of the great civilizations across Africa (Acts 2; Acts 8). Before the Muslims invaded and conquered Northern Africa in the seventh century, Christianity was already established and the worship of the God of Israel was already well established for centuries before. Long before the Greeks and Romans founded empires across the Middles Eat and Africa, Africa helped birth, protect and preserve the Jewish nation and its religious traditions (Gen 45:7;Hos 11:1; Matt 2:15).
This vital link and cross fertilization of cultures between African and Palestine, explains why the ancient Greek historian Herodotus was surprised to find thriving Christian communities in Africa when he visited. It accounts for the widespread penetration of Jewish and Christian traditions in the Falasha community and Coptic churches in Ethiopia and Egypt. This also explains why it was easy for our African brothers and sisters to reconnect to Christianity during slavery. They knew God and worshiped him not as a black God (or white God for that matter) but as a Spirit just as they did for millennia before in Mizraim, Phut and Cush and the other great civilizations of our African homeland.
Of course the Rastafarian faith to a large extent derives from the Old Testament and therefore central to their belief, as is the case in Judaism, Christianity and Islam (which all claim roots in the common ancestry of Abraham and the prophets), is the idea of monotheism. Moses exhorted the Jews, “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord (Deut 6:4).” If we allow for the recreation of God in our own image as Garvey suggests, then we will have to allow for a white and yellow God and a thousand other shades and hues of Gods as there may be ethnic and people groups. God thus becomes beholden to our ethnicity. A reasonable question might therefore be which of the God’s would truly be God? Would it be the black God, yellow or white God? Obviously, this makes little sense as it contradicts a core tenet of the Rastafarian’s own faith (and more importantly the Bible). Fortunately the scripture simplify things by the simple declaration –God is a Spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).
Finally the Bible concludes that the worship of any person or thing other than the one true God is idolatry (Exodus 20:2-; Deut 6:13). Jesus reminded Satan that worship rightfully belongs to God alone (Matt 4:10). That makes the veneration of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie idolatry. Selassie is not the Christ nor is he the second coming of the Messiah. He never claimed to be God or even a prophet. In fact, when he visited Jamaica in April 1966 and exited the plane on arrival at the Norman Manley Airport, he retreated when he saw the thousands of Rastafarians shouting Jah Rastafari in worship. Many were carrying signs that read “Selassie is Christ”, “King of Kings” and “God Anointed”. Selassie who himself claimed to be an ardent follower and worshiper of the Lord Jesus Christ, was not only according to Dr. Cooper “intimidated by Rastafarian veneration of him,” he was mortified. Like the Apostles Peter and Paul, he rejected man’s worship for he knew that worship belonged to God alone and no mortal. In 1967, during a radio interview he thus set the record straight when asked what he thought about the Rastafarian claims that he was the Christ. “I have heard of that idea. I also met certain Rastafarians. I told them clearly that I am a man, that I am mortal and that they should never make a mistake in assuming or pretending that a human being is emanated from a deity” he said.
So Fire I-drine – - you made a clear point about Selassie not being the creator – the all ever living never dieing being. but then later you go on to at your 3rd comment to bring evidence that yes indeed he is that GOD…
So am i correct in assuming that he a GOD to be worshiped? The Creator to be worshiped? or none of the above?
The miracles of Solomon as you know far exceed that of Tafari… What Solomon was given – no man on this earth was ever given or will ever be given – - in terms of wealth of this world. The wealth and riches and power that Solomon had on this earth will never be comparable..
How do you compare the Vast spanning kingdom that the creator had bestowed onto Solomon with that which was bestowed onto The father of Tafari?

Setting everything as unity aside, Haile Selaisse is no God. He never was. It is a big laugh that anyone could ever consider him as a God. He is a god of nothing.
To call this man a God, is a downright insult to our God Himself and to us Christians. It is also a rejection of our God, The Creator and Ruler of the world.
This man was subject to God The Father, God The Son and God The Holy Spirit but he refused to serve God. He was just too proud and pompous, placing himself above everyone and crowned himself, taking the name “Haile”, calling himself an emperor so that everyone will ‘”hail” him as a God. He resided in a palace, lived a lavish lifestyle and suppressed his nationals while they were residing in poverty and still do. What has he done for his country and for the people to be regarded as such? He has gone to his eternal reward as he deserved. If he was a God he would not die. He surely is not resurrected as Our Lord Jesus Christ. I am considering that his soul may very well be in Hell.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “The rulers of this world have condemned themselves.” Keep that in mind. Note how these people lived and rejected Him. This should inform any sensible person who that man was, what he became and where his soul would end up.
Smarten up! I reiterate that this man was never a God. The world has only one room for a God and He is our Almighty Father, who sent His Only Son to earth, to live, teach, suffer and die that whoever believes in Him and obeys His (our) Heavenly Father’s Will, will enter His Glorious Kingdom of Heaven. There is no room in Heaven for people like Haile Selassie due to the manner in which he lived. What a grave mistake to even consider him a God.
He has been judged by our God. I often wonder where the likes of Haile Selaisse, and his followers who have elevated him to such an earthly rank, where there souls are in eternity.
It is too bad there are those who live in ignorance of the truth and who refuse to accept the truth and will pay homage to this man. His teaching is a short-cut to nowhere and to the path of perdition, taking others down with him, those who have elevated him to the height of being a God and are his followers. Such a path is a dead end to nowhere. He was a false god. This man cannot save anyone’s soul. He was incapable of saving them and it appears not even his own soul. He was an enemy of our God. He lived as the enemy of God until he died, how can he ever be a God? It is the height of ignorance and stupidity to call this man a God. These people are jokers.
If some agnostics and atheists, those who reject The One True God want to teach about this man, they should have their own schools/universities.
They are tarnishing the minds of students of whatever age and turning them away from The One True God. They are causing disunity among people and in their country as they spread their propaganda.
There is a price to be paid for this for those who reject The True Living God and rather pay homage to a man who was created by our God and who has rejected Him. They, too, are reject Him by exalting a mere human beings who had no spiritual power over them.
As it is stated in Holy Scriptures: “Some people’s sins precede them to eternity. Others are followed by their sins.
Our God held him accountable and He is presently holding those who teach that he is a god and who are exalting him accountable for speaking what which is not true. Such people are called the false prophets of our times. They have already condemned themselves by their own words and teachings.
On the inevitable day when these people die, the moment they close their eyes and stand before God for their eternal judgment, they will find out their error, too late, how much they have offended God and led His children astray, the weak ones who obviously listen to them, from the One and Only True God, to their dilemma and eternal detriment where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. There will be no returning to earth to make amends and restitution.
Our Lord Jesus Christ who lived 2,000 years ago has warned us about “false prophets; false teachers” and “wolves in sheep’s clothing”.
There is only one God. There is not one man on this earth who has ever lived, none who are presently living and none to be born who can ever be greater than our God and who is superior to Him and surpass Him. The only God who ever lived on this earth is The Son of God, Our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ. He is sitting at the right hand side of His (our) Heavenly Father.
Holy Scriptures: “My Lord said to my lord, sit at My right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” Let us teach the truth and tell the truth.

The only fool here is you. All the scripture you will ever quote from the bible refers to Christ. You are mistaken the Selassie is Christ/God or ever will be. Our parents, family, friends, associates, presidents, prime ministers, mayors etc., all have helped their families and helped their nationals throughout their lives. Are we to call them God? By no means! They did what they were supposed to do according to their station in life. Why should people call a man who helped them when it was his duty to do so since he placed himself above them and governing them, a God? Mortal and spiritual ignorance is involved here. You are blinded by the Light of God The Father, God The Son and God The Holy Spirit. You are living in darkness of the truth.
If our Gospel is veiled, it is veiled for those who are perishing. In that God has blinded the eyes of the unbelievers.

It appears that Haile Selassie taught that he is god. Oh my! A mere mortal man preaching that he is god and higher than The One and Only True God and deceiving the people.
Holy Scriptures said just as Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us: “Many will come in My Name…So as to deceive the elect.” Haile Selassie was no exception to the false prophets of our time which Our Lord Jesus Christ spoke of.

When Ethiopians commenced migrating to Canada, I noted how much they resembled each other. I commented about it and said, this is the only country in the world I have noted that its nationals resemble each other. I was told that they had children with each other, mothers, fathers, cousins, etc. and that Haile Selassie as their head allowed them to have those types of relationships with each other which is the reason why they resemble each other. No doubt, Haile Selassie was the primary adulterous person in Ethiopia.
The First Commandment of God is: I am the Lord Thy God; Thou shalt not have strange Gods before Me.
The Ninth Commandment: Thou shalt not covert thy neighbor’s wife – woman and/or child.
This is the precedent that Haile Selassie set for Ethiopians, adulterous and unloving ways. Are you informing me that such a person as Haile Selassie is god? No way! Haile Selassie never suffered or shed blood and was not crucified for the sins and salvation of people. He was never resurrected and ascended into Heaven and is sitting at the right hand side of Our Heavenly Father.
The One True God is all-pure, all-holy and all-pefrect and He has taught accordingly.
Therefore, please do not use His Holy Bible – Holy Scripture, His Word and Teachings to reason out and satisfy yourself of the importance and deity of Haile Selassie as god. He is no god; never was and never will be.
The truth will be revealed to you in time, when you close your eyes in death and for all eternity.
The world never had and does not have several gods but Only One True God, Our Almighty Father, His Blessed Son – of God, Our Lord Jesus Christ – His Holy Spirit – Three In One God.
There is none, no mortal soul whom God has created who could ever compare themselves to Our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ and place themselves on a pedestal higher than Him. Do get it into your head, once and for all.
It is something you will never comprehend. As Frank Wertz who wrote the book, The Song of Bernadette which is also a movie: “For those who believe, no explain is necessary. For those who do not believe, no explanation is possible.”
This depicts you and others who refuse to recognize Our Lord Jesus Christ as Son of God, our King and Savior of the world, you will regret it.

haile selassie means power of the trinity, referring to father, son, and holy spirit. the so called holy bible was revised by king James of England. and where is the physical evidence that there was a man who walked the earth by the name of Jesus, cannot be archeologically proven. call no man good, there is only one true temple/church, your body which holds the spirit so in essence you are the true and living god, don’t you all know you are god as you are made in his likeness and image? to deny such is blasphemy. be at peace with the god in you for without the spirit the flesh cannot stand.

Yoshua/Kristos/Jesus whatever you may call him trod as a Lamb on earth and prophesy the reign of the Lion and if that sounds like kids play – know that the Lamb function and the Lion function is necessary for all life. Without the Lamb and the Lion function the water would not flow, the fire would not burn, the world would not turn, man would not breath and life would not be possible. Gesus came forth meek and mild but that state that begins as a nanny state in a world were everything gets worst would eventually end up as a tyranny but only Haile Selassie can save the day. He that would begin a large fire must begin it with only twigs but while Jesus doctrine was comforting it is not possible to run a modern world on such a simplistic approach. Hence the teaching of the Haile to man in this day. Yet Jesus taught that the second despensation would be dreadful, fire and brimstone – no more shedding blood on a cross and such – flames and destruction. Blood on Blood, Fire on Fire, Wrath on Wrath and Vengence on Vengence yet only the Haile can save the day. But the Haile is above the things they say and the accusations they make. And the elementary youth can’t diss the Uni grad. They say Jesus is the son of god who died for mankind and he is the only way to god. What is that a nursery rhyme? Because I know one called a ring a ring of roses. Rasta is above religion; what you call religion traditionally are just models you have in you head about life and it is different for every one. To give yourself a sense of selfworth, then you begin to scorn, then disrespect, then hate, slander, curse and kill but your evil works will turn back to you; if you follow the Haile you will be lofty – way lofty above these things. Haile See Last See I is the Holy Spirit of creation – above computer programming, above language, above number, even above the angelic order and the mystical order, above any name that can be named or any letter that can be formed. There is no hope beyond the Haile and they that deny and seek to defame him are lost and accursed.
