The head of the Dominica branch Purple Dragon Don Jitsu Ryu Karate School is calling for greater recognition and assistance for Karate in Dominica.

Sensei Shannah Robin a 3rd Degree black belt has been teaching the Don Jitsu Ryu System in Dominica for the past twelve years.

“We have participated in numerous tournaments and competitions over the years, representing Dominica. Often I have had to travel alone, at my own personal expense because students couldn’t afford to come with me. The children work so hard and are extremely disciplined; they deserve national recognition and financial support from the country which they represent.” Robin said.

The Purple Dragon School is currently preparing for participation in the July 2010 World Karate Championships to be held in Trinidad.

One of the major activities to prepare the students for competition, as well as to raise funds to bolster participation is a local tournament, scheduled for Saturday, September 26 at St. Gerard’s Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

A number of dignitaries, including the Minister for Sports have been invited to attend the opening ceremony and the day’s events.

The students will compete against each other in performing kata (prescribed sequential, karate movements), sparring and self defence.

There will also be displays including weapons, and spectacular feats such as the breaking of solid objects with bare hands.
